Mt. Zion: A Church with Deep Roots in the 21st Century
The current East Mt. Zion church was established in 1838 as United Brethren in Christ denomination. It was part of the East Findlay circuit, formerly known as the Salem circuit, and organized by the Reverend Michael Long. The first services were held in a log schoolhouse in Marion Township, Findlay, OH about a quarter of a mile west of the High Banks School. In 1946, the church became Evangelical United Brethren, and finally in 1968 became East Mt. Zion United Methodist Church.
In 1854, a frame church was erected on land donated by Rev. John C. Bright. The church was located where the Carey Road formerly branched off from the New Haven Road. The church was built almost entirely of black walnut and was used for about 30 years.
In 1884, a site just east of the old church was selected to erect a new brick church at the cost of $2998.50. The walnut lumber from the first church building was used as trim for the windows, wainscoting and rests. A bell, weighing 621 pounds was placed in the tower. The new church was heated by stoves, which used wood and were later converted to gas. In 1907, a furnace was installed. The first lights in the new church were kerosene lamps until they were switched to gas and eventually electric.
In 1961, the annex was built east of the sanctuary to provide space for additional classrooms and social activities. In 1988, an addition that included a nursery and three classrooms was built south of the sanctuary and annex. In 1999, a playground and grass play area were added north of the church on land donated by Paul Kring.
A list of pastors since 1938 includes: Palmer Manson, Earl Hedges, Don Bartow, Marion Hanover, J.W. Spahn, A.E. McVey, Donald Baer, James Clark, Roberrt Hochstettler, E.J. Haldiman, John Ash, Quentin Warford, Cecil Rice, Vergil Close, Thomas Sager, James Hazlett, James Brown, Barbara B. Nolin, John Schneider. In 1992 Dwight Norris was appointed and served until his sudden death in 2002 at which time a series of interim pastors served the congregation. In 2003 Dave Noel was appointed, followed by Robert Greene from 2017 until December of 2022. Lynne Otis, the current pastor, was appointed in 2023.
